The Coven, located on Bell Street, is an all-inclusive safe space salon designed to provide services in a sensory-friendly environment. It caters to individuals with neurodiverse needs, such as autism, and also welcomes clients looking for vivid, alternative hairstyles.
Tailored to meet the needs of neurodiverse children, young adults, and anyone who may find the bustling environment of traditional salons difficult to navigate, The Coven will feature quieter, calmer ‘sensory days’ with low lighting, reduced or no music, and private appointments to ensure a stress-free experience.
Offering a unique, inclusive space for individuals who may have felt uncomfortable or overwhelmed in traditional salon environments, award-winning hairdresser owner Verity Wall, with over two decades of experience in the hairdressing industry, has built a reputation for her creativity, empathy, and commitment to making every client feel comfortable.
Her inspiration for The Coven stemmed from her experiences working with neurodiverse individuals and her own love for alternative, expressive styles. Verity also owns and runs the successful hair salon next door – Belle Hair Boutique – which has operated in Romsey for 12 years.
Verity explains the reasons why she has opened a salon next door: “Although Belle Hair Boutique welcomes everyone, I began to notice how overwhelming the salon environment could be for some clients—especially those with sensory sensitivities.”
“The sounds of hairdryers, voices, bright lights, and constant movement can create a sensory overload, and I would see how stressful it could be for not only the children, but also their parents. I wanted to create a space where clients could feel completely at ease, free from judgement or discomfort.”
Verity added: “We offer private, one-on-one appointments where the salon is exclusively yours for the duration of your visit. There’s no rushing, no pressure—just a comfortable, relaxing environment. We even provide a chance to meet us beforehand and discuss how we can set up the salon to best suit your needs. It’s about creating an environment where you feel welcome, no matter what.”
The Coven will also be the go-to destination for clients who want bold, vivid, and alternative hairstyles. Specialising in everything from vibrant rainbow colors and platinum buzzcuts to mohawks, mullets, and gothic-inspired looks, The Coven offers a creative space for clients to express their individuality.
“If you know me, you know I’m a ‘goth girl’ at heart,” Verity enthuses. “I’ve always loved creating vivid, alternative looks, and The Coven allows me to really embrace that passion. Clients who want a more edgy, alternative vibe will love it here.”
In addition to its sensory-friendly environment and creative styling options, The Coven is committed to supporting clients who are transitioning or exploring new gender identities. Verity, who has recently completed counselling training and courses on understanding autism, emphasizes the importance of providing a safe, open space for these clients.
“We’re here to help anyone who’s on a journey of self-discovery or transitioning, whether it’s exploring a new style or finding a look that matches how they feel inside,” Verity explains. “The Coven offers a more intimate, judgment-free space where clients can speak openly and feel comfortable discussing their needs. It’s an honour to be part of such an important and personal process.”
“I want people to know it’s OK to communicate their needs,” Verity says. “Whether it’s a sensory issue or exploring a new look, The Coven is here to support you, and we can’t wait to welcome you into our community.”
