High Contrast Cinema Autumn Screenings

High Contrast Cinema, the volunteer-run community cinema based at the Allendale Centre, is preparing to launch a brand new season of screenings this autumn. The project continues its mission to celebrate classic cinema on the big screen, bringing vintage films to local audiences in a welcoming, communal setting.

This autumn, High Contrast Cinema turns its attention to one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons with Bogart: Crime, Chaos and Casablanca – a three-film season exploring the grit, romance and moral complexity that shaped Humphrey Bogart’s remarkable career.

The season begins on Friday 2nd October with The Roaring Twenties (1939), Raoul Walsh’s electrifying portrait of Prohibition-era America, featuring Bogart in a chilling early role alongside James Cagney. On Friday 6th November, audiences can experience In a Lonely Place (1950), Nicholas Ray’s haunting noir in which Bogart delivers one of his most acclaimed and unsettling performances.

The season concludes on Friday 4th December with an extra-special screening of Casablanca (1942), the timeless wartime romance that cemented Bogart’s place in cinema history and remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved classics. To add an extra touch of magic to the evening, audiences are invited to get into the spirit of the era with 1940s-inspired attire, whether that’s a full period costume or simply a Bogey-style fedora.

A season ticket granting entry to all three films will be available at a discounted rate of £20 until the evening of the first screening.

Matt Clark of the High Contrast team says: “Each season provides us with an opportunity to bring people together around vintage films that still feel alive on the big screen, and we’re especially excited by this one. Bogart is unquestionably one of the greatest icons of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and his appeal hasn’t diminished over time, whether he’s navigating the shadows of a noir or the quiet heartbreak of Casablanca. Watching these films with an audience, many seeing them for the very first time, is exactly the kind of shared experience we want to keep alive. Season tickets remain a huge help in keeping the project sustainable, and we’re excited to welcome everyone back for another run of unforgettable screenings.”
