Welcome to November, and even though winter is on the horizon, Weymouth still has so much to offer, with many exciting events to come.
Reflecting on the past month, it was one of great variety. We welcomed the magnificent Nao Victoria to our harbour as part of this year’s Pirate Festival, and I was thrilled to step aboard to welcome the crew to Weymouth. The following week, I was delighted to join in with the grand opening of Weymouth’s brand-new Primark store, which is a great addition to our town, and I am sure it will be very popular!
We also saw one of the sporting highlights of the year take place, with Weymouth Beach Motocross returning to the sands, as well as the unique Zombie Week during half term.
This month will host some of the town’s biggest events, and I am looking forward to being a part of them. Firstly, Weymouth’s annual Bonfire Night takes place on Wednesday, 5th November, which always generates a wonderful atmosphere. There will be a variety of food and trade stalls along the seafront from 5pm, with the beach bonfire being lit at 7.40pm. Then, at 8pm the fantastic firework display will begin, and I hope to see lots of people there to enjoy the evening.
One of Weymouth’s most poignant events, the Remembrance Sunday service and parade, takes place on November 9th. The service will be held at the War Memorial on Weymouth Promenade opposite the Prince Regent Hotel from 10.55am. All are welcome to attend and join us as we remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have and continue to defend our freedoms and protect our way of life.
On Saturday, 29th November, Christmas spirit will descend upon the town, with a range of festivities taking place. During the day, there will be elf workshops from 9am – 12pm and entertainment on the main stage in New Bond Street at 1pm – 5pm. Once again Weymouth will be filled with elves taking part in the giant parade from 1.15pm – 2pm, as the town takes part in an elf world record attempt! Then at 5pm, I have the great honour of switching on the town’s Christmas lights from the main stage.
Looking ahead, we will be well and truly in the run-up to the festive season, with Christmas events at the forefront of the calendar. We can look forward to Weymouth Steampunk Weekend from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th December, my Carols by the Coast event on Saturday 6th December, Chase the Pudding on Sunday 21st December and the famous Christmas Day Harbour Swim on the 25th, to name but a few.
In the meantime, have a great month, and I will see you in December!
