A new initiative designed to tackle loneliness among older people has been launched by GoodOaks Homecare, Dorchester and Weymouth. The service, called Social Circles, offers small-group day sessions to help local residents build friendships and stay connected within their community.
Running weekdays from 10am to 3pm, the sessions are hosted by trained care professionals and include a home-cooked lunch, dessert, and a program of gentle social activities. Door-to-door transport is also provided, making the service accessible for those who may find it difficult to get out and about.
Loneliness is increasingly recognised as a serious public health issue, affecting both mental and physical well-being. The World Health Organization estimates that one in six people globally – around 16% – are currently experiencing loneliness.
What makes Social Circles stand out is its relaxed, homely setting, a warm alternative to traditional day services. The environment is designed to encourage genuine connection and conversation, helping people rediscover the joy of shared experiences.
Registered Manager at the branch, Nadia Simeonova, said:
“We wanted to do something simple but impactful – a regular event that people can look forward to and feel part of. Social Circles is exactly that. It’s a space where people can make new friends, enjoy good food, and reconnect with their community.”
The launch of Social Circles reflects GoodOaks Homecare’s wider commitment to promoting wellbeing and strengthening local community ties.
