Come on a Stroll or a Hike With Ramblers this Autumn

September has arrived and brought with it the promise of some beautiful walking days. Autumn colours will be coming early after the very dry months we’ve had this year, and the softer September sunlight is already picking out the changes on some of the maples and sycamores.

Richard Eve, Chair of Winchester Ramblers, says, “Autumn is such an amazing time to go out walking and make the most of the Hampshire countryside. I particularly love walking through the falling beech leaves and hunting out berries and nuts to forage in our woods and along the hedgerows. Walking with Ramblers means there is always a new location or route that someone has discovered and a walk planned for us to enjoy with them, and with a different length walk happening on most days of the week, there really is something for everyone.”

2025 has been the 90th year of Ramblers in the UK as a walking and countryside charity, and Spring and Summer this year have been packed with special events, but Winchester Ramblers continues to run walks throughout the year on the following days:

Monday – Longer and more challenging walks of 11 miles or more

Tuesday – Short, sociable walks from The Bell Inn at St Cross, with the option to stop for lunch afterwards – ideal if you’re new or unsure about fitness

Thursday – Our main walking day, with walks at a range of distances and paces, some taking a picnic lunch and some with a pub or cafe lunch option

Sunday – Walks in the 7–10 mile range, exploring Hampshire’s glorious countryside

Winchester Ramblers are always open to new members and are delighted to have welcomed many new walkers this year. Some join to improve their health, some to find new places to walk, or because they are unsure where they are allowed to walk, and some for the safety of walking with a Group and a trained Walk Leader. You’ll make some new friends – or could even bring along a few of your own!

So why not come and try a walk with Ramblers this Autumn – there are Groups in Winchester and many other major UK towns and cities, as well as Young Ramblers Groups. Ramblers offer three free trial walks before joining for a small monthly subscription, which allows you to walk with Rambler Groups all over the UK. Ramblers is an inclusive charity and exists to help everyone, everywhere enjoy walking.

You can find more details at WinchesterRamblers.org.uk, including next week’s walks.
