M.V. FREEDOM is a Weymouth-based charity dedicated to providing access to the sea for people living with disabilities or mobility issues.
Our reporter Malcolm joined a trip across Weymouth Bay and Portland on their specially built, 10-metre, wheelchair-accessible catamaran. Leaving Weymouth Harbour, the 2-hour cruise took in many of the sights of our beautiful area, and for those who wanted to, an opportunity to meet the skipper and steer the boat.
All crew members are passionate volunteers who witness firsthand how empowering the experience is for each individual participating. The charity welcomes disabled adults and children aged five and above, as well as older people. As we approached Portland Harbour, there were shrills of excitement as we witnessed Honey, the local dolphin.
All on board had a wonderful experience, and as Kate, a wheelchair user, said, “It was Brilliant!” I think we all echoed her words.
