From Netley Marsh to Malawi: Life-Changing Tools Set Sail

Hampshire-based charity, Tools for Self Reliance, sent a 20ft container of refurbished tools to Malawi on Monday 16 June, on a journey that will take over 70 days, and will support vocational training and employment opportunities for people living in poverty.

The container, packed with almost 6 tonnes of equipment, includes 6195 refurbished tools into 210 different tool kits. These have been carefully restored by over 250 volunteers across the UK, with 5 volunteers who helped load the container on the day of the shipment.

Founded in 1980, Tools for Self Reliance supports people in Africa and the UK to build sustainable livelihoods by providing skills training and quality tools. This latest shipment will directly benefit three partner organisations working at the heart of their communities:

Foundation for Education and Social Development (FESODEV) works with disadvantaged groups to reduce poverty through skills development and local trade initiatives.

Young Achievers Foundation (YAF) supports young people, orphans, and vulnerable groups by delivering vocational training to improve their employment prospects.

Youth and Community Development Organisation (YouthCode) is committed to promoting human rights and livelihoods amongst women and children, and empowering youth to be self-reliant through the provision of education and skills.

“Every tool we send represents the potential for someone to build a future on their own terms,” said Sarah Ingleby, CEO of Tools for Self-Reliance. “Thanks to the incredible dedication of our volunteers and the commitment of our partners in Malawi, this shipment is more than equipment, it’s a catalyst for change, hope, and opportunity.”

Leaving from Southampton, the container will arrive at Nacala Port in Mozambique, before travelling by rail to Lilongwe, Malawi. The next shipment, due to go out at the end of the year, will be heading to Ghana to support local projects.
