A critically acclaimed adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September.
A witty and magical operetta, Iolanthe tells the story of a forbidden love that causes an absurd fusion of two worlds – the whimsical Fairyland and a bamboozled House of Peers- while also being a sharp satire on power, privilege and parliamentary democracy.
This award-nominated production is brought to the stage by Charles Court Opera – a UK leading chamber opera and music theatre company that champions G&S and whose previous productions include adaptations of H.M.S Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado; whose repertoire also includes the likes of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Puccini’s La Bohème, and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Charles Court Opera also produce a murder mystery spoof featuring all the G&S operas, as well as boutique pantos that are known for their ‘off-piste’ nature!
Iolanthe comes to Winchester following a run at the famous Wilton’s Music Hall in London – the only surviving Grand Music Hall in the world- and Fringe Theatre Award nominations for Best Opera Direction, Best Opera Production, Best Opera Ensemble Performance, Best Opera Choreography and Best Opera Musical Direction. It features first-class performances from a young cast including Charles Court Opera favourites and award-nominated returning members; and opera songs Oh Foolish Fay, If you go in, you’re sure to win and the popularly known The Nightmare Song.
