Two Bridges which is a voluntary organisation providing transport to medical appointments, held its AGM last Friday, 20th March at Godshill Village Hall, and along with the Committee, many drivers and coordinators were present.
Simon Carmichael, Chairman, opened up by explaining that Two Bridges now handles nearly 1000 jobs per annum, and at its current rate is expected to be serving at least 300 clients within the next few months, across Martin, Damerham, Alderholt, Rockbourne, Sandleheath, Godshill and Fordingbridge. Tony Parker, Treasurer, then presented his report, illustrating that Two Bridges is in good financial health, explaining that the generous donations from clients exceed expenses, which are primarily used to reimburse drivers’ mileage. Any surplus is donated to worthy medical causes.
Derek Ayling, Publicity Officer, followed Simon Carmichael and Tony Parker, and highlighted how the organisation is in danger of being a victim of its own success. The number of regular clients is growing at a higher rate than that of new drivers. Two Bridges is always in need of more drivers, coordinators and helpers.
Group members, coordinator Kip Pirie and driver Karin Gould emphasised the need for more drivers, adding that Two Bridges drivers are all very personable and enjoy the voluntary work. The benefits of being a driver include rewards such as sociability, sense of purpose and the pleasure of chatting with, and assisting very appreciative clients. One of our newish drivers commented on what a difference driving for Two Bridges had made to his life. Recently widowed, it has given him a whole new purpose.
Guests included Cllr. Phil Woods, of the New Forest District Council and “Mark”, of the Blue Lamp Trust, an organisation that provides free home safety and security surveys for older and vulnerable people in the community. The talk reiterated some of the issues that face vulnerable people, helping them to stay safe from scams and threats, and how the Blue Lamp Trust can assist them (for details, call 0300 777 0157).
Everyone at the meeting was then treated to a superb lunch, provided by Godshill WI at Godshill Village Hall. Thanks go to them!
