Three rural communities in Test Valley are set to benefit from major improvements after securing grants from the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF). The funding will help transform much-loved village spaces, making them more accessible and welcoming for residents.
King’s Somborne Village Hall has been awarded more than £6,270 to install new stage curtains, creating a better space for performances and community events. Sherfield English Recreation Project will use its £20,000 grant for drainage works on the playing pitch, reducing flooding and making the area usable all year round. Braishfield Parish Council has also received £20,000 to resurface the car park next to the community shop, village hall and playing field, improving access for residents and visitors.
These improvements will help keep community spaces vibrant and accessible. They’ll provide safer, more welcoming places for events, sport and everyday activities, while supporting local businesses and volunteers. Together, these projects will strengthen village life and boost rural prosperity for years to come. All works must be completed by 31 March 2026.
Councillor Stewart Macdonald, Portfolio Holder for Community Led Projects, said, “Community spaces are at the heart of village life, and this funding is a real boost for our rural villages. These projects will make a big difference to the way people use and enjoy their local facilities.”
Councillor Maureen Flood, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Resources, added, “These grants aren’t just about improving facilities – they’re about investing in the future of our villages. By making these spaces more accessible and welcoming, we’re helping communities thrive and ensuring they remain at the heart of rural life.”
Councillor Phil North, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said, “We’re proud to support these improvements through the Rural England Prosperity Fund. They will help strengthen our rural communities and ensure that important facilities continue to serve residents for years to come.”
The Rural England Prosperity Fund was a government initiative that provided capital funding for projects in rural areas. It aims to boost local economies, create jobs and improve community facilities. Test Valley Borough Council administers the fund locally to ensure that investment benefits residents and businesses in the borough’s rural communities.
