Intrepid travellers are invited to an evening’s talk by expert mountaineer Simon Yates when Simon Yates of Touching the Void: My Mountain Life comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Saturday 24 October.
Simon Yates is the mountaineer who, in June 1985, on the remote Siula Grande mountain in Peru, was slowly pulled over the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, who was dangling by a rope 50 metres below. Simon’s decision to cut the rope saved their lives and led to an extraordinary tale of survival that became world-famous after the release of the bestselling book, Touching the Void, and subsequent film and stage adaptations.
Simon will recount that fateful climb and his life as a mountaineer in the years that have followed as he remains an active climber and guide, leading expeditions to some of the world’s most remote mountain ranges in the Arctic, Antarctic, Alaska and Asia. Simon’s talk combines drama, adventure and dry humour with breathtaking scenery as he shares images and film from his greatest climbs.
Simon is a world-renowned explorer and author with a career spanning over 40 years, including first ascents of countless mountains and books Against the Wall, The Flame of Adventure, and The Wild Within – all of which have been shortlisted for mountain literature prizes, plus work as a public speaker. Simon’s expedition company, Mountain Dream, takes small groups on personal mountaineering adventures led by himself and others he’s built relationships with, to peaks, volcanoes and glaciers.
Simon Yates of Touching the Void: My Mountain Life will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Saturday 24 October at 7.30pm. For more information, visit theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
