Abbeyfield Wessex Society prepares for a week of 1950s-themed celebrations to mark Abbeyfield’s 70th Anniversary
Residents, staff, volunteers and supporters at Abbeyfield Houses across the south are preparing to step back in time as they celebrate the 70th anniversary of Abbeyfield with a week of nostalgic events and activities from Monday 6 July to Monday 13 July.
The celebrations form part of a nationwide milestone marking 70 years since Abbeyfield was founded by Richard Carr-Gomm in 1956. What began as a single house in south-east London has grown into an international charity supporting older people across ten countries, united by a shared belief that everyone deserves companionship, dignity and a place to belong.
Throughout the week, residents at Abbeyfield Wessex Houses will enjoy a programme of 1950s-themed activities designed to celebrate the decade in which Abbeyfield was founded.
At Abbeyfield Wessex properties in Dorset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, the anniversary week will be filled with opportunities to share memories, enjoy music and entertainment from the era, and reflect on the friendships and connections that make Abbeyfield communities so special. Many of the events are open to everyone – booking is required for some to help us manage numbers. It is also an excellent chance to view the house and see what living in an Abbeyfield retirement property is like.
Vanessa Booker-Card, Chief Executive of Abbeyfield Wessex Society, said: “As we celebrate Abbeyfield’s 70th anniversary, we’re not only reflecting on our rich history but also celebrating the people who make our community so special today. Our residents, staff, volunteers, families and supporters all play a vital role in creating a warm and welcoming home where people can thrive.”
For seven decades, Abbeyfield has remained committed to helping older people live fulfilling, connected lives. Across Abbeyfield Wessex, that commitment continues through the creation of vibrant communities where companionship, independence and wellbeing are at the heart of daily life.
The anniversary celebrations will also recognise the dedication of generations of staff and volunteers whose compassion and commitment have helped shape Abbeyfield’s success over the past 70 years.
As Abbeyfield Wessex looks towards the future, its mission remains unchanged: to continue evolving and innovating while providing outstanding support, friendship and community for older people for generations to come.
