Children at Tops Muscliff Nursery were thrilled to welcome firefighters from Springbourne Fire Station this week for a special visit linked to their current learning about “people who help us.” The crew brought along their fire engine to the nursery, giving children of all ages a memorable, hands-on experience of the vital work firefighters do in our community.
During the visit, every child had the chance to sit in the cab of the fire engine, explore the control panels, and see the powerful hoses up close. The firefighters talked to the children about their protective clothing and equipment, then supported them to try on real firefighter helmets and have a go at using the radio to “talk” to the crew. The children were full of excitement and questions, eager to find out more about how firefighters keep people safe.
The visit followed several weeks of themed learning across the nursery, with each room setting up activities linked to firefighters and fire safety. Children have been building their own fire stations with construction materials, engaging in role-play as firefighters, creating fire engine artwork, and reading stories about emergency services. Seeing a real fire engine and meeting real firefighters helped to bring this learning to life and deepen their understanding.
To show their appreciation, the children presented the firefighters with handmade “thank you” flowers they had carefully crafted in their rooms ahead of the visit. As the crew prepared to leave, they treated the children to one final thrill by switching on the fire engine’s lights and sirens, which caused great excitement in the garden.
Nursery Manager Teresa Barbero-Lopez said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome the team from Springbourne Fire Station to Tops Muscliff. Experiences like this are invaluable for our children, bringing their learning to life in such an exciting and meaningful way. The firefighters were fantastic with the children, taking the time to answer their questions and involve them in hands-on activities that helped build their understanding of safety and the important role they play in our community. Moments like these help our children feel proud of the everyday heroes who support and protect our community. It was a truly memorable visit, and we are so grateful for their time and support.”
The team at Tops Muscliff would like to extend a huge thank you to Springbourne Fire Station for their time, enthusiasm and support. Experiences like this not only create lasting memories for the children but also help them learn about community safety, respect for emergency services and the many different ways people help others every day.
