Follow in the Footsteps of Wimborne’s History

Wimborne has a rich and colourful past and the historic town trail will take you to meet some of the most important people and buildings that have played their part in making this so. The accessible trail is based on 12 green plaques (local importance) dotted around the town, with the bonus of a blue plaque (national importance) showing where Thomas Hardy lived during his time living in the town. You can start the route at any point.

Planet Wimborne has produced a postcard and leaflet about the trail and these are available from various outlets around the town, including the Museum of East Dorset. The leaflet is also available on Planet Wimborne’s website: www.planetwimborne.org.

The trail was launched in Gullivers Bookshop on Saturday 14th March by the Town’s Crier, Chris Brown, Mayor, Councillor Jeff Hart, Neil Smith (Planet Wimborne Trustee) and Malcolm Angel, the owner of Gullivers Bookshop. Malcolm said, “I’m delighted to see the history of our great town come to life through the launch of this trail. I have spent many years researching and publicising its history through my books and walks and I hope others will come to see how special this place is for both residents of the area and visitors alike.”

Each month Planet Wimborne, together with the Town Council and Wimborne BID is launching a trail to show off different aspects of the town as part of the Town of Culture. January and February saw the launch of music and pre-loved trails, and forthcoming ones will highlight bee homes and trees. Details can be found on Planet Wimborne’s website.

Planet Wimborne is launching these trails to encourage people to spend more time out and about enjoying nature, which is known to help with health and wellbeing as well as helping protect our fragile environment.
