Winchester Good Neighbours were most deserving of recognition at the recent Mayor’s Community Awards held at the Guildhall. The group of just 37 volunteers from Winchester Good Neighbours were asked to provide 1357 trips last year, helping people in the Winchester area get to and from hospital or other medical appointments.
In receiving the award, nominated by Harry Mycock, on behalf of WGN, Chairperson David Boul said, “We are delighted to receive the award in recognition of Winchester Good Neighbour’s work in helping those with no family or friends to get them to and from medical appointments. Our volunteers are caring people who support and help people on journeys that might otherwise prove a bit challenging for them. Mind you, our biggest challenge is meeting demand. We desperately need new drivers. Someone who can do just a trip or two a month would help spread the support we give.”
WGN seeks drivers who get on with people, communicate clearly and demonstrate patience. People need to have their own car for trips and live in the Winchester area. Whilst parts of the area, such as South Wonston, have a good number of volunteers, others, such as Kings Worthy and Weeke, are under-represented, so anyone from those areas is invited to join the volunteers, but volunteers from Winchester as a whole are invited to contact WGN. The volunteer is recompensed for authorised running costs from the client’s donation, and any surplus goes to the Charity. The reward is in helping others and joining a team of dedicated fellow volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact winchestergoodneighbours@outlook.com.
