A community health event hosted by Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club has helped 64 local men take vital action on their health, thanks to a free prostate cancer screening day held at the Barrington Centre, Ferndown.
A total of 227 men attended the event, receiving a quick and simple PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test to check for early signs of prostate cancer — the most common cancer in men in the UK.
The results showed:
20% of attendees received a red, high-risk result letter
8% were issued an amber, borderline warning
In total, 64 men were advised to seek further medical guidance from their GP, a crucial early alert that could lead to life-saving treatment. “We’re so grateful to everyone who came forward,” said club President Peter Burnett. “Early warnings like these often make all the difference.”
Following the overwhelming response and impact of the event, Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club has confirmed that another free PSA screening day will take place in March 2026. Further details, including how to book, will be announced on their Facebook page in the coming weeks.
The Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Club has been supporting the East Dorset community since 1969. In addition to health initiatives like this, the club organises seasonal fundraising events, welfare support, and community outreach programmes throughout the year.
