A Passion for Bach in Romsey Abbey

Looking forward to Easter 2026, a rare chance to hear JS Bach’s monumental St Matthew Passion with a stellar line-up of soloists including Bach specialist Katharine Fuge, Malachy Frame, Jessica Gillingwater and Gareth Brynmor John and showcasing rising stars including Sebastian Hill as Evangelist, a role that he is becoming increasingly renowned for.

London Baroque Sinfonia have a long-established reputation for excellence as period instrumentalists, and local connections are strong, with Andrew Hayman conducting and two of Winchester’s finest chamber choirs, Kingsgate Voices & Southern Voices, who will be joined by Winchester Cathedral Girls Choir.

The driving force behind the project is Winchester resident Jon Newman, a lifelong Bach enthusiast, with a growing reputation for high-quality concerts featuring his Bach Winchester Voices.

For those unfamiliar with the music, the Passion tells the story of Christ’s final days as the drama unfolds between the main characters: Evangelist, Christus and Pilate, interspersed with some of Bach’s most beautiful choral music. In the setting of Romsey Abbey, this will be a highlight for the Easter period.
