As Romsey comes alive with festive events in the run-up to Christmas, Abbey United Reformed Church – known locally as the church by the arch – is delighted to open its doors to the community.
During this busy and joyful season, the church will offer a warm and welcoming space for anyone wishing to pause, rest, and recharge amid the celebrations. Visitors are invited to come in, take a seat, warm up, and make use of the facilities while enjoying the town’s Christmas atmosphere.
Abbey URC will be open to all on Friday 22 November during Romsey Lights and Festive Delights, and again on Monday 23 December for Carols in the Market Place. Whether you find yourself caught in the cold, in need of a short break, or simply looking for a peaceful moment away from the bustle, Abbey URC extends a warm welcome to everyone.
There will also be free mulled apple juice and mince pies, along with a chance to sit and warm up, on Saturday, 29 November during the Romsey Winter Carnival and Lantern Procession, and again on Sunday, 14 December during the Romsey Makers Christmas Market.
On Saturday, 6 December, Abbey Hall will host a children’s drop-in Christmas craft session from 2-4 pm. Children can make decorations and cards, or simply be creative with the materials provided. (Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.)
From 30 November until Christmas Day, visitors will find a Tree of Angels in the church entrance. The tree will begin Advent simply, adorned with lights and a star. You are invited to come into the church and write the name of someone you wish to remember – or a short message about them – on an angel and hang it on the tree. The church will be open on Saturday and Sunday mornings, or you can visit during any of our open events. If you prefer, angels and pens will also be available at our prayer post box in the doorway. You can write a message at any time and post it there; angels will be collected regularly and added to the Tree of Angels.
By Christmas morning, the tree will be filled with memories and messages for loved ones no longer with us. These names and messages will be included in our prayers throughout the Christmas period.
Every Thursday morning (10am-11.30am), the Abbey Hall Lounge is open for a friendly social get-together as part of the Warm Welcome Campaign and Chatty Café scheme. Everyone is welcome – it’s a warm space with friendly faces and free refreshments. Not sure where Abbey Hall is? Walk under the arch by TSB towards the park; it’s the second green door on the left, just before the road widens.
