Former Royal Marine reignites motorbike passion with Weymouth care home team’s support

A former Royal Marine enjoyed a thrilling day watching motorbike racing on the beach with the support of his care home team.

Michael, who lives at Buxton House care home, was delighted to be at the heart of the action during the Weymouth Beach Motocross 2025, organised by the Purbeck Motorcycle Club (MXC) with the Weymouth & Portland Lions Club.

Michael has loved motorbikes from a young age, owning many over the years, including a Harley Davidson and a Suzuki Bandit 1200. Michael used his bike to travel to and from Plymouth to Lympstone during his time serving in the Royal Marines, as well as travelling around the country in his spare time.

The special day out was arranged through the home’s Make a Wish initiative, which encourages residents to share passions and interests they are unable to pursue without the home’s support. The care home team then works to safely make these wishes come true.

During the event, the Buxton House team enabled Michael to meet several motorcycle riders before they raced along Weymouth Beach, giving him the chance to have a chat about their bikes and the competition.

Afterwards, he said: “It was a great day, which brought back many memories of when I used to go and watch it independently. Everybody was very helpful, friendly, and welcoming. Going out for the day to something I used to really love and was passionate about made me very happy. I’m already looking forward to going again next year.”

Lauren Taylor, Home Manager at Buxton House, said: “It was a privilege for our team to enable Michael to spend a day around other motorbike enthusiasts who share his passion. Ever since, he has been sharing his memories of the event and telling us all about the motorbike riders that he met. The motocross community were so kind and welcoming to him, and it was lovely to see Michael reconnect with his lifelong passion through our Make a Wish initiative.”
