It’s August and the resort is perhaps at its busiest with plenty of events happening, and with the school holidays in full swing, this brings many more visitors to our gorgeous town.
Three of Weymouth’s gardens were recently awarded Green Flag status by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, so there are plenty of inspiring places to explore over the summer. Weymouth Town Council announced in July that Radipole Park and Gardens was awarded its very first Green Flag, while Greenhill and Sandsfoot retained the coveted award for another year running.
This is brilliant news. I was privileged to visit all three of these open spaces and meet the gardeners and some of the people from the Friends’ groups who put so much work into making these spaces such a pleasure for all to enjoy. Well done to everyone involved.
It is also the return of the summer fireworks nights across Weymouth Bay. The first of our lower noise displays took place at the end of July, with the next lower noise display on Monday, 11th August. The other dates are Monday 4th, 18th, and 25th August – bank holiday Monday. These are not lower noise displays.
Each event begins at 9.30 pm and can be viewed anywhere along Weymouth’s iconic seafront, so bring your friends and family and enjoy an evening supporting businesses in the town.
If you would like a shout out for a special occasion on any of the firework nights, look out for posts on Weymouth Town Council’s Facebook page for details on how to get a name check read out on the seafront PA system!
In my next column, we will be in to autumn, but until then I hope everyone gets to enjoy the remainder of the summer and that you get out and about and enjoy wonderful Weymouth.
Cllr Caroline Nickinson
Mayor of Weymouth
