Hello all, and welcome to my first article as the Mayor of Weymouth, a title I am most honoured to hold. July is now upon us, which means the summer holidays aren’t far away! Weymouth really does look spectacular this time of year, and I love the buzz around the town.
It was such a proud moment to be elected as the Mayor of Weymouth during the mayor-making ceremony in May, and I would like to thank Cllr Jon Orrell for all his hard work during his time as Mayor. I am delighted to share that Weldmar Hospicecare will be my chosen charity during my term, and I am very much looking forward to supporting them and raising awareness of their invaluable work.
The role of Mayor is an exciting one, with many opportunities to attend a variety of events that really showcase all the great things that go on in our community. One of my first engagements was attending Weymouth Town Council’s Community Expo, which took place at the Jubilee Clock. The weather was fantastic, and the event enabled members of the public to find out more about the work of the Council, as well as meeting a variety of voluntary and community groups who do so much to help people in Weymouth. We were also treated to fantastic performances from local community choirs.
Weymouth has a rich military history, and I was proud to host the US Memorial Day service in May as we reflected on the immense courage, bravery and determination displayed by all troops during the Normandy landings. More recently, I attended Weymouth Town Council’s annual Armed Forces Weekend Celebrations and was honoured to lay a wreath at Sunday’s service. It was great to welcome veterans and their families to the town, and I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who joined us to recognise and support the incredible work that our Armed Forces personnel continue to contribute to our country.
Weymouth plays host to some exciting events all year round, and on 18th July, there will be a display of ‘Porsches on the Prom’ from 6.30 pm – 9.30 pm, followed by the Lotus Car Club on Saturday 19th July between 9.30 am and 3 pm; both taking place at the Jubilee Clock. I am honoured to be attending the RNLI Lifeboat Blessing at Weymouth Lifeboat Station on Sunday 27th July, and I am looking forward to the return of Weymouth’s summer fireworks on Monday 28th July, with this first display being one of lower noise.
I am really looking forward to the year ahead, and if you would like me to attend, open or support your event, please email
