Wimborne Minster Commemorates VE80 with Moving Day of Celebration and Remembrance

On Thursday, 8th May, the town of Wimborne Minster came together to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE80) with a full day of community celebration, reflection, and remembrance. The event began on Minster Green, where crowds gathered to enjoy a stirring programme of performances and commemorations. Highlights included a lively performance by Scaplen’s Community Players, the presentation of the Schools’ VE Poetry Competition winners, and a standout musical performance from the much-loved wartime harmony duo, The Land Girls, whose nostalgic repertoire brought the spirit of the 1940s to life.

At 5:00 PM, the bells of the Minster Church rang out in a symbolic call for peace, followed by a solemn service of remembrance and a wreath-laying ceremony at the town’s war memorial.

As dusk approached, the Quarterjacks marching band led a well-attended procession from Minster Green to Wimborne Cemetery. There, the Commonwealth War Graves were respectfully illuminated, setting a poignant backdrop for the evening’s final event. A formal proclamation was delivered by the Town Sergeant and Crier, Chris Brown, followed by the lighting of a commemorative beacon by members of The Wimborne Militia—a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. The evening culminated in a stirring cannon salute, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

The event drew strong support from the community and was attended by Town Mayor Cllr Jeff Hart and Mayoress Mrs Barbara Hart. Also present were Vikki Slade, MP for North Poole & East Dorset, Police and Crime Commissioner Mr David Sidwick, and Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset, Victoria McConaugh DL.

Wimborne Minster Town Council would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the public, whose turnout and support made the day truly memorable.
