Ramblers Celebrate 90 Years of Walking

2025 is the 90th Anniversary of the Ramblers Association, and a number of special events are being held all across the country to mark the occasion. With over 100,000 members and growing, there is plenty of reason to celebrate this important milestone, and Rambler’s many successes in keeping the countryside open for all. This is also one of the nicest times of the year to be out walking, and here in Winchester there are a number of Rambler events being laid on by the local Group this spring and summer to encourage people to come out walking with us, discover the beautiful local countryside we are blessed with, and to enjoy the amazing health benefits of exercising outside!

Between late May and the end of August we are delighted to be able to offer a series of 5 mile Evening Walks, some from Winchester and others from locations close by, where we will make the most of the light summer evenings to explore some of the natural beauty of the area, as well as some ancient and not so ancient history and interest along the way, including at Cheesefoot Head, St Giles Hill and Teg Down.

If art and nature is your thing, then you might be interested in joining us on one of our series of free “Walks With Artists”, running alongside and complementing the “Every Step of The Way” South Downs art exhibition at the Arc this summer. On these walks, we will be accompanied by exhibiting artists who will talk about their methods and inspirations, while we walk some of the landscapes they have captured in their work on the Winchester end of the South Downs National Park.

Winchester Ramblers are also running their popular “Winchester Walking Weekend” again this June, with the support of Winchester City Council and Winchester Tourist Guides. We will be leading 18 free walks over the course of a single weekend, over various distances and all leaving from the front of the Cathedral.

Details of all these events and individual walks can be found on the Winchester Ramblers website WinchesterRamblers.org.uk along with all the walks in our regular weekly walking program. Walks with Artists should however be booked on The Arc website ArcWinchester.org.uk, where these can be found under “Special Events”.

Ramblers encourages everyone to come along on up to three of our walks before deciding whether to become a member of our charity.
