People local to Winton, Moordown, Charminster and Talbot Woods are invited to have their say on draft plans to introduce a 20mph neighbourhood for the area. A public engagement on the draft plans will run from 18 March to 28 April.
Winton and the surrounding area currently rank as having the highest number of road accidents in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Over a five-year period, from 2019-2023, there were 217 casualties from road accidents, with 36 people suffering serious injuries. Councillor Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations, BCP Council, said: “We are committed to making roads across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole safer for everyone, and this proposal for a 20mph Neighbourhood for Winton and the surrounding area is ultimately about saving lives. We promised to give local people more say over the decisions that affect their communities, and this consultation is exactly that. This is your neighbourhood, it is where you live, where you work and where your children play and go to school, so we want to hear from you before any decision is made.”
More than seventy 20mph speed limits and/ or zones already exist across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Data collected over a ten-year period shows there was on average a 40% reduction in casualty collisions in these areas. The proposed 20mph neighbourhood for Winton will be funded entirely through an external government grant received from the UK government’s Department for Transport (DfT). It is not being funded through council tax.

There will be two drop in events as part of the consultation with officers available to answer any questions. These will be held at Winton Library on Thursday 3rd April between 3-5.45pm, and Friday 4 April between 11.30am-2.30pm.
The consultation closes at 11.59pm on 28 April 2025.
