Fantastic Theatre for Families across Dorset this Half Term!

From puppetry, storytelling and sea-shanties to globe-trotting adventures with live music, comedy and more, there’s plenty to keep children of all ages and their families entertained this February half term as two fantastic shows tour across Dorset as part of the programme by Artsreach, the county’s rural arts charity.

Sam O’ Shanty has lived his whole life at sea, ever since he first stowed a’board ship when he was just a wee scrap of a lad. Since then, he has sailed all the Seven Seas, from Devonport to Durban Bay; from Nantucket to New Guinea; from Cape Wrath to the Cape of Good Hope. But now Sam has come ashore with his two shipmates, Davy Lad and Sonny Jim and together they have got all manner of marvellous tales to share! Aye, there’ll be stories of beguiling mermaids and batty sea witches, a boisterous retelling of the dastardly Blackbeard’s comeuppance, and tangled yarns of hidden booty and beasties of the deep.

This nautically comic show for all the family is crammed with facts, fantasy, and farce! Alongside Angel Heart and Rattlebox’s usual flair for puppetry, silliness and storytelling there’ll be the singing of a sea shanty or two – so come one, come all… Huzzar! Perfect for children aged 4+ and their families, Angel Heart Theatre and Rattlebox will be touring to Sixpenny Handley (07771 983883) at 11am on Monday 17 February, Litton Cheney (07799 612941) at 11am on Tuesday 18 February and Sturminster Newton Exchange (01258 475137) at 11am on Wednesday 19 February.

Can you fit the entire world into just one show? Well, if anybody can, the inimitable Craig Johnson of Squashbox Theatre can! Join this intrepid explorer on a breathless race across the planet as he attempts to decipher the clues left by his globe-trotting Great Aunt Gladys; clues that could finally explain her mysterious disappearance! Wonderful World crosses continents, encountering strange and wonderful creatures, meeting crazy characters, and learning incredible facts about geography, ecosystems, climate, language and navigation along the way.

Discover the things that connect us and make us all a part of this Wonderful World in this brand-new show for all the family. Blending ingenious puppetry, fantastic facts, silly slapstick, crazy comedy and marvellous live music, Squashbox will be preforming live at Swanage Mowlem (01929 422239) at 11am on Tuesday 18 February, Broadwindsor (07796 454203) on Wednesday 19 February, and Alderholt (01425 652729) on Thursday 20 February. After the show, children can take part in a puppet-making workshop and create their very own articulated card puppets of amazing animals from around the world! Please note that workshop places are limited.`
