While I had a few weeks off last month—apologies for the lack of updates—our dedicated crew and volunteers have been as busy as ever.
Busy Times for Our Lifeboats
Our lifeboats, Ernest and Mabel, the Severn-class all-weather boat, and Jack and Phyl Cleare, the Atlantic 85 inshore boat, have both been active, responding to multiple call-outs. In September, we received a total of eleven requests for assistance, followed by seven more through mid-October.
One notable weekend in early October required both lifeboats for two challenging rescues: one involved a sailing boat that had run aground off Osmington, and the other, a vessel with engine failure in Lyme Bay.
Exciting Developments at Our New Shop
At our newly opened shop on the south side of the harbour, Sharyn Hibbs and her team have done an outstanding job fitting out the space. The visitor centre section has been a big hit with kids and adults alike, offering fun activities like dressing up as future crew members, taking photos, and trying out the in-store computer game.
If you haven’t visited yet, we’re currently open 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Come by and join in the fun!
200th Anniversary Celebrations
As we continue celebrating our 200th anniversary, some of our volunteers had the pleasure of getting an up-close look at a fantastic sand sculpture of Ernest and Mabel created by local artist Mark from Sandworld Weymouth. The likeness and detail are truly impressive—thank you, Mark!
Fundraising Efforts
Our volunteer fundraising team has been working tirelessly all year. Although our dedicated fundraising chair, Teresa Drage, has had to take a short break (very unlike her!), the team has continued to support various events around town.
Upcoming Events
Looking ahead, we have some exciting events on the calendar:
- Christmas Bazaar – Wednesday, November 13th, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Weymouth Pavilion
- Christmas Carol Service – Friday, December 20th, 7:30 PM at Weymouth Lifeboat Station
Seasonal Safety Reminder
With autumn in full swing and winter approaching, please remember that weather conditions on the water can change rapidly. If you’re heading out, stay prepared and take extra care.
Until next month, enjoy the water and stay safe!
