The B-Side festival is back on Portland. One amazing island, 1000 stories from around the corner to across the globe. Join b-side on an unforgettable journey exploring stories of migration – walks, talks, incredible artworks and experiences created by artists who bring a fresh outlook to how we see ourselves and each other.
Most events start on 31st of August to 8th of September across numerous Portland venues. This vibrant celebration of arts and culture brings together local talent and international artists in a unique coastal setting. Established in 2008, this festival has become a highlight of the region’s cultural calendar, drawing attendees from near and far.
The festival’s name pays homage to its location on the “B-Side” of Portland, contrasting with the more well-known Jurassic Coast nearby. It symbolises a spotlight on the lesser-known, yet equally captivating, aspects of the area’s cultural and natural heritage. One of the distinctive features of the B-Side Festival is its integration of art with the local environment. Artists are invited to create site-specific works that respond to the island’s landscapes, history, and communities. This approach not only enriches the festival experience but also fosters a deeper connection between art and place.
Visitors can explore a diverse range of artistic expressions, including installations, performances, workshops, and exhibitions. The programme often includes collaborations between artists from different disciplines, encouraging innovative and interdisciplinary creations. Music plays a significant role in the festival as well, with performances ranging from traditional folk music to contemporary experimental sounds. The B-Side Festival showcases both established musicians and emerging talents, offering something for every musical taste.
The B-Side Festival also emphasises sustainability, aiming to minimise its environmental impact through eco-friendly practices and initiatives. This commitment reflects the festival’s dedication not only to artistic excellence but also to responsible stewardship of the natural resources that make Portland such a special place. It provides a platform for local businesses, artisans, and performers to showcase their talents and products, boosting tourism and supporting the cultural identity of Portland.
