Wow, what a year – and we’re not done yet!
As this edition goes to press we will be into the final few days of Weymouth Lifeboat Week with events and celebrations of all things lifeboat and life-saving here in Weymouth.
We hope you’ll join us for the remaining events; Music from 5:30 and Quiz from 8:00pm at the Nothe Tavern on Friday 2nd August, and On Saturday 3rd [10:30 – 4pm] come along to the lifeboat station for our open day and a tour of the lifeboats; the Ernest and Mabel our Severn class all-weather boat, and the Jack and Phyl Cleare the Atlantic 85 inshore boat.
As we continue to mark the inauguration of the RNLI as we know it today in this the 200th anniversary of its founding in1824 we are most honoured that Greenhill Gardens created a unique floral display in recognition of this, which was officially opened by Cllr Jon Orrell, Mayor of Weymouth in July.
Our volunteer fundraising team have been working overtime this year; not only have they been supporting events all around town but they’ve also launched our new shop in the cove on the south-side of the harbour, so please come along, have a browse and say hi!
Relocating the shop will free up additional space for the crew in the lifeboat station – which by the way was opened in September 1924, more about that next month.
Since the opening of our current lifeboat station its crews have been called upon thousands of times and rescued many hundreds of people, and this June was no different. With the sun and warm weather making an all too rare appearance(!), and an increase in people taking advantage of our beaches, the Weymouth lifeboats were called upon ten times to assist persons in distress either on the water or in the close proximity of it.
If you are planning to join us for the remaining Lifeboat Week Events please check on our social media page Weymouth Lifeboat and Weymouth Lifeboat Fundraising pages in case of any last minute changes.
Enjoy the Water, and Stay Safe!
