The Chapel began its renovation journey in 2013, opening its doors the following year to become the coffee shop we know and love. Nowadays The Chapel is a place that transforms coffees, cakes and savoury snacks into community benefit through the work of Totton charity Youth and Families Matter (YFM). But the chapel building itself dates back to the early 1900s and has very much been part of the lives and memories of local people.
After The Church of the Cross Evangelical Church finished services and had been empty for several years, the Trustees for the building wanted to see it used for good within the community. Throughout the refurbishment process, a skilled volunteer team for YFM carefully nurtured the building’s heritage, keenly preserving the building’s original features including the floor, the concrete sign above the front door and the baptistry. Their tireless work on the project means The Chapel today has a new lease of life, yet holds firmly to the building’s history and heritage.
Some visitors are able to share their memories of attending Sunday school in the church building 50, 60 or even 70 years ago. One elderly gentleman recalls when the church stood in a field before the surrounding houses were built. He cheekily used to lay in the ditch spying on the children attending Sunday school. Another gentleman brought in his Sunday school bible, complete with the dates of he attended and recalled how much he enjoyed going as the children were given sweets which were a rare treat.
The Chapel team today is appreciative of the people who share their memories, helping them keep learning about the building they care for and keeping their memories alive for generations to come. It was a special place then and remains a special place today.
All proceeds from The Chapel coffee shop and Treasure Box children’s charity shop go to supporting the work of YFM.
