In 2024, there are numerous commemorative events planned in Portland and Weymouth to honour significant historical moments. Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, dates, and locations for each event.
To mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Castletown D-Day Centre in Portland and the Nothe Fort will host two events. The first event, “D-Day 80th Anniversary at Castletown D-Day Centre,” is scheduled for June 6 from 7:30am to 4:00pm. This event will offer a day of reflection and education, featuring exhibits and possibly reenactments highlighting the pivotal moments of D-Day. From 4:00 to 7:30pm the Nothe Fort will continue the D-Day 80th anniversary Commemorations.
Following this, the “D-Day 80th Anniversary Weekend at Castletown D-Day Centre” will take place on June 8 and June 9. This event is expected to build upon the activities of the first event, providing visitors with a more in-depth exploration of the history and significance of D-Day over two days.
The Weymouth Pavilion Esplanade will host the “D-Day Darlings” on June 13 from 2:00 to 4:15pm. This event will showcase performances that capture the wartime spirit, celebrating the music and songs that brought hope during World War II.
The “Weymouth Armed Forces Celebrations” will be held near the Kings Statue in Weymouth from June 22 to June 24. This multi-day celebration will pay tribute to the service and sacrifices of armed forces members through parades, live music, and various public festivities suitable for all ages.
Lastly, the “D-Day Centre Military Vehicle Weekend” will return to Castletown, Portland, on June 29 and 30. Enthusiasts and families can enjoy a display of historical military vehicles, providing a unique opportunity to see machinery that has played vital roles in military history up close.
