Mayor’s Message

We are through January and into February. January is always a poignant month as we start another new year. But also, because we held a Holocaust Memorial Day service at Radipole Park Gardens on the 27th to remember those around the world affected by the Holocaust and genocide.

I am looking forward to warmer days ahead with spring just around the corner, which usually heralds lots more events and engagements to attend. If your organisation would like to invite me to attend or open your community event in Weymouth, then you can contact me at mayor@weymouthtowncouncil.gov.uk

Alternatively, to keep up-to-date with what I am doing, please visit or follow my “Mayor of Weymouth – Dorset” Facebook account.

Looking further ahead to May, the upcoming elections for Weymouth Town Council are approaching – on Thursday 2nd May. I thought this column would be a great opportunity to talk about what it’s like to be a councillor and what I enjoy about carrying out this role for the community.

I enjoy being a contact point and voice for the people who I represent in the ward of Wyke Regis at Weymouth Town Council and Wyke Regis and Rodwell at Dorset Council. Meeting and learning more about the people who live and work in Weymouth is always a pleasure. I enjoy helping and working with the wonderful groups and organisations working across our communities as well as being able to put different groups in touch with each other. I have also had the opportunity to help with fund raising events which helps to raise awareness for causes.

I have always been interested in what happens in the town. When I returned to live in Weymouth, the much loved and respected Councillor representing the ward in which I was brought up in decided to retire and asked me to consider standing for the seat he was vacating after nearly 30 years. I knew the areas well and decided to go forward.

I was honoured to be elected to represent Westham West on the old Borough Council and am equally delighted that almost 25 years later I am still able to serve the community as the ward Councillor for Wyke Regis on Weymouth Town Council.

If you are interested in standing to be a councillor, you can find out more details by visiting the Electoral Commission website, or by dropping into an information session between 5.30 and 7pm, in the Council Chamber at The New Town Hall where our Town Clerk and Councillors will be available to answer all your questions.
